Still Here Basketball, Inc. has announced its recent incorporation as a non-profit organization certified by the State of Ohio.
Still Here began, in the 1990’s, as an informal group of basketball players in Northeast Ohio. Most were men ranging from 30-70 years of age who still wanted to participate in the game despite the competitive pressures of growing older. Over time the Still Here community of ballplayers grew to include several hundred active or occasional participants. During that time younger ballplayers were also welcomed.
Additionally, Still Here evolved from simply being a “family name” under which teams played basketball in area recreational leagues and tournaments --- to a brotherhood in which those involved began to help others in need. The spirt of Still Here came to mean that teammates in life, as well as on the basketball court, would always be “still here” to extend a helping hand. In recent years special events such as 3-on-3 charity tournaments and invitation golf outings have been sponsored to help local families and organizations such as the American Cancer Society.
By formalizing its activities as a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, Still Here Basketball, inc., will now be able to expand its ability to provide opportunities for both basketball and brotherhood.
A golf outing, scheduled for August 20, 2011 at Rawiga County Club, Seville, Ohio, has, as its triple fundraising goal, assistance in the sponsoring of local AAU and scholastic athletes who would not otherwise be able to participate in basketball because of pay for play; a donation to The American Cancer Society; plus development of a standing benevolent fund that will enable the organization to help others on short notice.
A 3-on-3 basketball tournament is planned for later in the fall of 2011.
